*Based on three people sharing a residence in Aitkenvale, a suburb of Townsville close to James Cook University

Including orientation week

Calculations are based on:

Number of weeks – College residents arrive and depart needing to do nothing more than move their personal belongings. College fees are based on residents moving in for “0” Week and staying for the 35 weeks of the academic year. No fees are charged during the seven weeks of university breaks. Off campus residents will need at least one week to find and move into a house/flat, one week to move out (including cleaning to get their bond back), and pay full rent during all university breaks.

Accommodation – assumes finding accommodation in a three bedroom house or flat in Aitkenvale (across the river from JCU and a popular student address) with two other compatible housemates (assumes also that all three remain together all year and share costs equally)

Food – assumes three meals per day at a maximum cost of $4 per meal, with one “special” meal per week of no more than $10 each. No allowance for shopping or cooking time. College residents enjoy a choice of high quality foods at every meal as well as regular special event catering. See the sample menus elsewhere in this site.

Household items and household needsitems and consumables required to maintain a household.

Electricity / gas – Ergon Energy estimates a three person household will use between $3 and $10 of power every day, depending on usage patterns. Calculations are based on using just $6 per day.

Phone rental – allows for rental of one home phone line shared between residents. Additional phone lines for dial-up Internet are not included. College residents each have in-room phone and broadband Internet access. Line connection and call charges apply in both College and off campus situations.

Transport – assumes 5 return tickets on Townsville Sunbus from Aitkenvale to University (includes 25% student discount)

Maintenance – allows for either ongoing small scale maintenance (light bulbs, mowing, litter, etc) or major end of tenancy cleaning and maintenance costs

Security and support - College residents are supported by professional staff and resident tutors, providing security, personal support and academic support
