Alcohol and Drug Policy

The College makes no attempt to prohibit the use of alcohol except under exceptional circumstances. However, students must recognise the responsibilities involved with this privilege. Abuse of alcohol will not be regarded as an excuse for misbehaviour but as a justification for disciplinary action, including possible dismissal from the College. It is the student’s responsibility to know the rules detailed in the College Handbook, Appendix II.

At JFC, drunkenness is never accepted as an excuse for inappropriate behaviour. Responsibility within the community is encouraged so that College residents, staff, property and grounds are safe from disruption owing to the misuse of alcohol.

The possession, cultivation, use or distribution of illegal drugs and the misuse of prescribed drugs are prohibited. These drug-related activities are grounds for immediate dismissal from the College. To ensure the safety of residents and staff of the College, the manufacture, dispensation, distribution, sale, possession and use of illegal drugs is not tolerated. The College’s policy is based on concern for the safety and well being of residents and visitors.

Drug-related activities are grounds for immediate dismissal from the College and disciplinary action will be carried out in the case of a breach of these requirements, to ensure that residents respect their obligations to, and the safety of, others living at the College.

Pub-crawls

Pub-crawls are not supported by JFC (nor by any other College or Hall at James Cook University). Our College accepts no responsibility for providing legal or other support if incidents occur.

Noise

To ensure the environment is favorable for study, the College requests that students maintain a low level of noise within College bounds, to allow students the ability to study and sleep in their rooms at all reasonable times.

Guests

Guests are permitted overnight in the College however permission must be granted beforehand and restrictions apply to the frequency and length of their stay. These conditions ensure that spare mattresses and meals can be provided and that College security can identify unwelcome guests.
